Ten-man Vospers conceded their first goals of their run in the Southampton Senior Cup after Dean Byrne was sent off after just SEVEN minutes of the St Mary's final.

Playing against Winchester City with 11 men is hard enough but cup holders Vospers suffered their biggest defeat in two years after midfielder Byrne was sent off for elbowing Danny Smith in his last game for the club.

Referee Chris Williams had no hesitation in sending off former Easteigh player Byrne for violent conduct but the decision ruined the game as a contest for the 1,518 crowd.

Hampshire League champions Winchester dominated Vospers, who were left with little choice but to play with a lone front man and scrap for what they could get on the wide St Mary's pitch.

Vospers boss Dave Diaper said: "I really fancied our chances with 11 men but the sending-off was harsh and made it very difficult.

"I didn't think it warranted a red card - a caution would have sufficed so early in the game.

"The players had been loooking forward to this night for a long time and then you get that.

"Dean was annoyed and frustrated but said it wasn't intentional. There was no malice and I think he could have got a bit more support from their player.

"No one wants to see a player sent off so early in a game like that. It's a disappointing end for Dean, because he's giving up Saturday football so he can spend more time with his young family.

"Hopefully I'll get him to change his mind. No one wants to end on a note like that."

Ian Mancey, whose ban for his FA Vase headbutt was reduced from 112 days to 42 this week, celebrated with a hat-trick.

His opener was the first of three Winchester goals in nine first-half mintes.

After the target man poked home from six yards on 26 minutes, man-of-the- match Andy Forbes added a brilliant second - a textbook header into the far corner from David Piper's right-flank cross.

Mancey's second was equally stunning.

He controlled a Steve Beeks pass, then spun and fired into the bottom corner from 25 yards in one swift movement to ensure a 3-0 half-time lead.

The irrepressible Forbes added a clinical fourth midway through the second half, striking Matt Bick-nell's left-flank cross first time into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

Mancey completed his treble after Forbes had put him through in injury-time to wrap up a convincing win.

But the final was always going to be an anti-climax after the early dismisaal of Byrne for his clash with Smith in the centre circle.

Vospers, runners-up to Winchester in the league and the cup, had a handful of half chances but the result was never in doubt once Byrne was ordered off by Gosport official Williams.

Outgoing Saints secretary Brian Truscott presented Winchester with their third trophy of the season and boss Neil Hards said: "I didn't see the sending-off incident but I don't care how we win. We lost at Oadby in the FA Vase when we deserved more.

"I'm just delighted for the fans, the players and everyone involved with the club that we've finished an excellent season on a high."
