IT WAS a close call at the Friends Provident St Mary's Stadium in the Daily Echo Hampshire County Council Primary Schools Six-a-side Soccer Challenge.

Two of the final four games in the girls' competition had to be settled on the number of corners won.

It was a big day for the youngsters from 28 teams taking part in the 12th annual finals as Saints opened up the St Mary's pitch that has been graced by the likes of David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Michael Owen during the past season.

The event, which included a family fun day, attacted a large, enthusiastic crowd.

The finals were the culmination of seven regional events staged throughout the county during March and April. A total of 250 teams originally entered.

It was an enjoyable day for all the teams but particulary for Townhill Junior School who won the girls' event ( and St Monica Junior School, who entered the victorious boys' team.
