A HAMPSHIRE dad turned midwife when his wife went into labour without warning and he had to deliver their new arrival on the hallway floor of their family home.
Steven and Florinda Turner, of Vanguard Road, Townhill Park, Southampton are still recovering from shock after their week-old baby Natasha made her entry into the world in just five minutes.
Natasha, who was one week overdue, is blissfully unaware of the fuss she caused and is now enjoying getting to know her brother and two elder sisters.
"It's still all a bit blurry. I didn't know what was happening and I just thought I needed to go to the toilet," said Florinda, a 26-year-old housewife.
"By the time I realised it was the baby coming, all I could do was shout and luckily Steve was there."
Steve, 26, said: "My wife got a few pains so I phoned my mum and the midwife but I was on my own.
"Then Florinda stood up and the baby just popped out on the hallway floor. In total it all took about five minutes.
"I dropped the phone as I was talking to the midwife so she heard the baby coming into the world.
"The kids were all right behind me and the youngest one was a bit over awed by all of it but as you can imagine I had my hands full.
"I had to hold the baby for about 15 minutes before the midwife arrived, it was all a bit messy. I cleaned her mouth, made sure she was breathing and rested her on her mum.
"I was totally in shock for a few hours afterwards so the midwife informs me."
Florinda, whose longest labour has been just two hours 30 minutes, had been due to give birth at Southampton's Princess Anne Hospital.
Baby Natasha was given a clean bill of health straight away and Florinda said: "In the future I will tell her how proud of her dad I was.
"She is a brilliant baby and sleeps a lot. She must have tired herself out because she came into the world with a bit of a bang."
