In a career spanning more than a decade, trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas has built up a reputation as one of the leading figures in modern jazz.
He has an astounding musical range from fast and furious post-bop to delicately textured soundscapes.
His latest album project Freak In is yet another musical departure, his first to utilise a computer-based recording studio. He was inspired in this latest move by the ingenuity of recordings by Bjork, Radiohead and Slum Village.
Douglas was previously named artist of the year for Down Beat and Jazz Times. He will be touring with his new band, duplicating the distinctive electric feel that runs through Freak In. The band members include: David Gilmore (guitar), Jamie Saft (keyboard), Seamus Blake (saxophone), Brad Jones (bass), Derek Phillip (drums) and Ikue Mori (electronic percussion). Douglas says of Mori, "(She) is a good example of someone who's working with computers and yet remains so personal and intimate. When you can't tell what something is on this record, it's usually her."
The Guardian called Dave Douglas 'a phenomenon - not so much part of a new wave as an entire movement by himself.'
