SAINTS maybe gunning for FA Cup glory but their fans are aiming to take the charts by storm and go straight in at number one.

Stand aside Spurs cup classic Ossie's Dream (1981) The Red and White Machines are here with their 2003 anthem Southampton Boys.

Produced by four local football fans, the tune has caused quite a stir since it was first played on Power FM last week and bookies Ladbrokes have even offered odds of 100-1 for it to reach number one.

At the official launch yesterday, promoter and Power FM DJ Des Paul believes sales of just 10,000 could take it into the top 10 and 20,000 into the top three.

"The audience reaction has been brilliant," he said.

"Every time it's been played we have had lots of people calling and texting in. It's a great record. Football records are funny things. Some-times they are very cheesy but this one is a good record.

"Even Pompey fans have been calling us up to say they might not agree with the content but it's a good tune."

The single was written and produced by two members of Mark Hill Productions - Dan Molinero and Carl McIntosh with vocal supplied by MC Alistair from Artful Dodger.

The unofficial anthem also features commentary from Power FM sports commentator Peter Hood and has a catchy samba B-side called Mardehio featuring the lyrics: "Marsdinhio, who needs Ronaldo or Louis Figo, Marsdinhio, he's a football genius".

Studio engineer Carl, 25, from Inner Avenue, Southampton, said they thought of producing a single after watching Saints beat Wolves. After seeing Saints overcome Watford at Villa Park in the semi-final the pair turned the record round in three days.

He said: "It was three working days of about t 13 hours a day. We finished it on the Tuesday and it was played on the Wednesday.

"As far as me and Dan go we're such big Saints supporters our prime motivation was to get it played at the FA Cup final and maybe on Match of The Day, if we're lucky."

Southampton Boys will hit the record shops and supermarkets on May 12 and is expected to cost £3.99. Chart competition was expected to come from Justin Timberlake's new single but that has been put back a week clearing the way for Southampton Boys to rush up the charts.

A percentage of the profits will go to the Southampton Association for the Blind and a local children's charity, which has yet to be named.

Look out for Tuesday's Daily Echo for details on all the Saints cup songs and your chance to vote for the one you think is the best.
