Hampshire were left with a battle to avoid defeat against a Yorkshire side that led by 141 runs and still had ten second innings wickets in hand when the second day's play ended last night.
The day began badly and never improved for Hampshire - Second Division favourites Yorkshire dominated all three sessions.
Yorkshire were allowed to add 119 after resuming on 174 for seven, having been 128 for 7 at one point on the first day.
Darren Gough, unbeaten on 30 overnight, was eventually caught behind for 72, a 96-ball innings that included two sixes, one off Shaun Udal that took him to 49 and a hook off Chris Tremlett.
His knock came to an end when he chased a wide one in Simon Katich's first over of the day.
Michael Lumb, who reached his second first class hundred with a four off his legs, was still unbeaten on 115 after more than five hours at the crease when Kirby was squared up by some Wasim magic.
The end of Yorkshire's innings signalled lunch but Hampshire's reply began as badly as it could have done, when John Crawley had his off stump uprooted in the second over.
That brought debutant Katich to the crease and the left hander looked in good nick, driving and pulling Chris Silverwood for four -two of the four boundaries in the Western Australian's run a ball 17.
Katich was having no trouble in finding the rope - it was only when trying to scamper a quick single when he fell into trouble.
After driving into the covers off Gough he called a single but Gary Fellows was more than equal to the new boy, knocking a stump out of the ground with a sensational direct hit. Umpire George Sharp had no hesitation in giving Katich out.
Derek Kenway, meanwhile, was still at the crease and finding runs hard to come by. He eventually reached double figures in the 25th over with a drive into the covers off Steve Kirby - who then clipped the top of the opener's off stump.
That prompted a collapse of worrying proportions as four wickets fell in as many overs for nine runs.
A sensational catch at short leg, where Lumb continued his good day with a reflex dive to his left, ended Will Kendall's brief stay at the crease.
And when Robin Smith followed in the next over caught behind as he attempted to drive, Hampshire were reeling on 60 for 5.
Dimi Mascarenhas fared little better, he departed with only four runs added but Wasim and Nic Pothas at least provided some stability in the Hampshire middle order.
Pothas brought up the hundred with a straight drive off Sidebottom with the last ball before tea and Wasim enjoyed cutting Gough for boundaries before he was bowled as he tried to work the ball to leg.
But there was some luck for Pothas. With the scoreboard stuck on 111 for 7 - a manual board had to be brought in from the Nursery Ground because of a power cut - Pothas was dropped by first slip Matthew Wood.
The Nelson seemed to be working in Hampshire's favour.
Sidebottom dropped Shaun Udal off his own bowling when the off spinner had made three. Udal was able to strike Yorkshire's offie, Richard Dawson, for the swept boundary that took Hampshire past the follow on target of 144.
But Dawson had Udal caught at short leg with the score on 154 and Chris Tremlett did not last long before he popped one up to silly point.
That left last man Alan Mullally to provide some entertainment.
Back at number 11 in the absence of Ed Giddins, Mullally struck Dawson for a six into the groundsman's tunnel before he was caught behind.
Yorkshire openers Matthew Wood and Michael Vaughan negotiated eight overs of their second innings with no alarms before stumps.
