CRICKET: RAIN in Cardiff ensured Hampshire's game against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens ended in a draw on Saturday.

The only full day's play in the four-day county championship match took place on Wednesday when the visitors racked up an excellent 381-5.

The Welsh side's bowling attack, minus Stephen James and Michael Kasprowicz, were put to the sword.

New Hampshire captain John Crawley (65) and Robin Smith (92) shared a 123-run partnership before Crawley was out.

Will Kendall then made 32 as the score moved on to 210-3 and Smith was out 13 runs later.

Then came another century partnership of 122 for the fifth wicket between Alex Morris (45), in the line-up for James Adams who had to return to university, and Nic Pothas, who finished the day on 81.

The second day did not start until after lunch and Pothas then added just six to his overnight total.

The day belonged to Dimitri Mascarenhas as he struck a 78-ball century, which included 13 fours and four big sixes off the bowling of Robert Croft. His second 50 came in just 20 deliveries.

Once Mascarenhas reached three figures, Hampshire declared on 531-7, with Wasim Akram having chipped in with 23 and Shaun Udal unbeaten on 32 as the innings closed.

By the close of the second day, Glamorgan had moved to 128-2, with Chris Tremlett in the line-up for the injured Ed Giddins and Mascarenhas taking the wickets.

Just two hours' play was possible on day three of the game as the home side moved the score to 288-3, with David Hemp and Michel Powell both passing 50s and Alan Mullally claiming the only wicket.

The final day again saw only play before lunch as Akram dismissed Powell for 85 to end a 166-stand with Matthew Maynard.

Maynard went on to top-score in the match with 112 before he was caught by Udal off Tremlett. The young bowler then claimed the wicket of Wallace as Glamorgan ended the match with 412-6 and both sides picked up 11 points for their efforts.
