STEVEN Soderbergh's remake of the 1972 Russian sci-fi movie received mixed reviews on opening.
But much of the reason for this is it isn't a conventional science fiction movie - there are no stomach-bursting aliens, laser guns or robots.
This is a subtle film that uses the sci-fi setting to explore human relationships, love, God and forgiveness.
A troubled psychiatrist, Chris (George Clooney), is sent to a space station orbiting the planet Solaris.
When he arrives he discovers that the crew are being visited by beings created from their memories and are becoming increasingly paranoid.
Chris' dead wife, Rheya (Natascha McElhone) appears in living form, bringing him face to face with his own troubled past.
Both stars put in great performances and McElhone is definitely one to watch - not only for her ethereal beauty but also her subtle acting.
The film is fairly slow-paced, but this is a movie to enjoy for its look, feel and ideas more than its action.
Until Thursday. Box office: 023 8033 5533.
