The goths are back in town, well sort of - in the form of eighties 'gothic pop' band All About Eve. Julianne Regan and Andy Cousin return with new guitarist Toni Haimi. The band formed in 1985, split in 1993, to reform in 1999 after supporting The Mission.
All About Eve rapidly outgrew their goth-rock beginnings when their acoustic ballad Martha's Harbour reached number ten in 1988. Two successive top ten albums followed in All About Eve and Scarlet & Other Stories, but real commercial success always proved elusive. Part of this could be attributed to the fact that the band are impossible to pigeon-hole - gothic, folk, rock, you decide. The record-buying general public doesn't like surprises, they want to know what they're getting from a predictable band, but All About Eve didn't play by those rules.
The split was brought about by the fans' negative reaction to the Ultraviolet album. They were thrust back into the limelight in 1999 by The Mission, keen to have Eve support them on their tour.
After playing two years worth of acoustic gigs and as a new century dawned, All About Eve released their first album for eight years. Fairy Light Nights, a collection of unplugged highlights was the result.
The Brook will provide a great chance to catch up with what All About Eve is all about now.
