Southampton University have won the British University Team Racing Finals in stunning style, winning both the mixed and the ladies' competition.

This follows their success at the BUSA Match Racing and confirms Southampton's dominance of university sailing so far this year.

The victorious Southampton mixed team consisted of Ben Field, Paul Campbell-James and Andy Cornah on the helm with Tom Foster, Katie Fairclough and Toni Corlett crewing. The ladies were represented by Karen Greenland, Katie Archer and H Brown and crewed by Liz Peacock, Rosie Geyman and Katie Haighton.

The event was hosted by Southampton University and was held at Spinnaker Sailing Club in Hampshire. Twenty-four mixed teams and ten ladies' teams had qualified for the event, which is the pinnacle of British University sailing.

For the first time it was sailed in seven fleets of identical Fireflys and with winds of eight to 14 knots on the first two days it was ideal team racing conditions.

The mixed teams were initially divided into three groups and after further matches the eventual semi-finalists in the mixed competition were Southampton, Cambridge, Oxford and Bristol.

In the light, shifty winds of the final day a battle reminiscent of the recent boat race saw Oxford and Cambridge against one another and after a closely fought contest Oxford was victorious.

In the other semi-final, Southampton convincingly took Bristol apart.

The first to three points final between Oxford and Southampton proved how dominant the Southampton team were. They won the first two races with 1, 2, 4 and 1, 2, 3 scores and continued in similar fashion in the third race with another first and second to take the national title without losing a single race in the competition.

The ladies' event was a much closer battle. Southampton took on Bristol in the first to two points final.

Bristol took the first race and Southampton the second with a 1, 2 combination. In the decider, Southampton took control early on and Bristol couldn't get back so the Southampton team took the title giving a historic double.

The university sailors now go on to further battle in Portsmouth for the Yachting Nationals. The winner of this will represent British Universities at the Student Yachting World Cup in France in the summer.
