Jimmy Adams is the surprise name in Paul Terry and John Crawley's first Hampshire XI - but he may not be available for next week's trip to Glamorgan.
Adams's availability over the next six weeks will depend on his studies and Loughborough UCCE's commitments in their first season as a first class side.
First class status was granted to Loughborough in November after they won all three of the major university cricket competitions - the UCCE Championship, the UCCE one-day challenge and the BUSA Championship - for a second year running.
And left-handed batsman Adams' role as captain leaves him juggling two cricketing roles in his second year as a human biology student.
Next week Hampshire may have to make way for Loughborough UCCE, who play their second first class game against Surrey at the Oval.
That could rule Adams out of Hampshire's second match in Cardiff.
But it is hoped he will be available for the rest of the championship fixtures as Loughborough UCCE's other first class match is at Leicestershire next month - when Hampshire take on Oxford UCCE.
Adams said: "Hampshire are obviously the priority in the long term but my availability at the moment depends on Loughborough coach Graham Dilley and whether I'm required to play for them.
"It wouldn't be a problem if Loughborough are playing friendlies when Hampshire are playing but this is an important season for Loughborough, they want to make the university's centre of excellence more credible."
Adams, pictured right, began last season with twin hundreds against Kent at Canterbury but Loughborough UCCE's first class status meant that his 107 against Somerset at Taunton last weekend carries more weight.
He added: "I knew that there was a batting spot up for grabs with Frankie (John Francis) and Simon Katich unavailable and now I've got to build on last week's hundred.
"It was good to get that under my belt until I was bowled by Simon Francis. It's a long old season but it was a pleasing start.
"I've only ever watched Nantie Hayward on TV but he's got plenty of pace and I think I faced Matt Mason in Perth if I remember rightly."
