Paul Terry has revealed that there could be a surprise in the Hampshire XI to play Worcestershire over the Easter weekend.

First team manager Terry, pictured, and captain John Crawley are close to deciding their first team since taking on their new roles following last week's practice games against Somerset and Surrey and the inter-squad Twenty/20 match on Sunday.

Terry said: "A few names who weren't expecting to get in might have an opportunity - it should be interesting. The guys are fit.

"There are one or two niggles but nothing too serious. Just about everybody is in quite good form."

The big debate is over who will open the batting with Derek Kenway.

Crawley said: "The pick of the batsmen during pre-season have been Derek Kenway, Robin Smith, and James Hamblin.

"Derek has been playing very well, so he's definitely going to open, and Will Kendall was playing well before he got a slight injury to his upper leg, so there are plenty to choose from.

"We got a lot out of the games last week - a lot of the batsmen got runs.

"The only problem was that it was bitterly cold, which made it difficult for the bowlers. But overall it was good.

"We haven't fully decided on the team but we've got a reasonable idea and we'll try and give as much opportunity as possible to those players we pick.

"I know there's competition for places but I want people to feel settled into the side.

"Once we've decided on the team, we'll have to back our judgement for a while."
