AFC Totton have given themselves a giant shot in the arm ahead of next month's Jewson Wessex League Cup final.

They put on possibly their best performance during John Robson's short reign as manager to upset league champions Eastleigh 2-0 at Testwood Park last night.

The match was settled by a goal in each half from Paddy James and Ben Thomson in front of a 187 crowd and Robson could not have asked for a better dress rehearsal for when the sides meet again in the May 5 cup final at AFC Newbury.

Not only that, it lifted Totton second in the table on goal difference from Gosport Borough, keeping them on course for their highest ever Wessex finish. Robson said: "We were superb tonight and thoroughly deserved our victory. What with having a chance to go second in the table and playing the league champions, who we will meet in the cup final, we could have had the jitters and got off to a bad start, but it was totally the opposite.

"For 80 of the 90 minutes we were the better side by far. Eastleigh had a ten-minute spell after the break, be we defended superbly to keep another clean sheet.

"It was particularly pleasing because we lost James Sherrington injured in training and had to have a reshuffle, but there was no one in the side who didn't play well."

The experienced Stuart Ritchie was outstanding and Wayne Shaw pulled off one breathtaking save to snuff out any hope of a late Eastleigh revival.

Robson said: "This lets the lads see that we don't have to go to the cup final as underdogs."

Worryingly for Eastleigh, they have picked up just one from a possible nine points since clinching the championship against Gosport a week and a half ago.

Andover hotshot Justin Bennett took his season's tally to 45 goals as the Lions clocked up their biggest ever win at Cowes Sports.

Bennett struck twice in a 4-1 result, completed by Danny Sullivan and a Glen Damen penalty. Mark Burrows netted the Island reply.

Dean Dalton punished a defensive mix-up to bag Moneyfields' 78th-minute winner at Bournemouth.
