AN ASSAULT on litter was made in Whiteley in a bid to rid the village of unwanted rubbish.
A small army of litter pickers took to the streets, alleyways and parks of Whiteley collecting sackfuls of rubbish including sweet wrappers, food packaging and newspapers.
An abandoned car was even discovered at the Whiteley Community Centre car park.
The Clean Up operation was supported by Fareham council who provided
the volunteers with bin bags, litter pickers and gloves.
Leader of the council and Whiteley resident Sean Woodward also took part in the three-hour litter pick.
He said: "It certainly was a useful exercise and hopefully we sent a clear message to those who do drop litter that it just isn't acceptable.
"The council has also provided a number of new bins in the area to reinforce that. I would encourage any residents who want to do a similar event to contact the council."
