SCORES of seriously ill children were treated to an exciting day out at one of Hampshire's top attractions.

About 50 cancer patients from Southampton and other parts of the Wessex region spent a fun-filled day at Paultons Park, near Romsey.

The event was organised by Wessex Cancer Trust and the Fire Service Preservation Society. Children were driven to Ocean Village, Southampton, where they boarded 11 fire engines owned by members of the society.

The appliances made a dramatic entrance to Paultons Park after the drivers switched on their blue lights and sirens as the vintage vehicles swept up the drive. Some were owned by Hythe Fire Engine Preservation Society, while others came from Romsey.

The event was organised for children aged up to nine who began their treatment at the Piam Brown Ward at Southampton General Hospital.

After spending four hours at Paultons Park they enjoyed a slap-up tea at Romsey fire station.

Wessex Cancer Trust spokesman Jane Carley said: "It was a fun day out away from the hard and realistic routine the children face during their treatment.

"We do it every year and it's one of our favourite outings."
