RAMBLERS are celebrating the opening of a major extension to one of Hampshire's best-known footpaths.

The Test Way used to finish at the Lower Test Nature Reserve, between Totton and Southampton, but now continues to historic Eling Quay.

Representatives from the Romsey, Southampton and New Forest branches of the Ramblers' Association attended a quayside ceremony at which the extension was formally opened.

They also visited Totton and Eling Heritage Centre, which overlooks the quay, to view an exhibition about the Test Way.

John Thackray, chairman of the New Forest branch, said: "We're very pleased to see the extension.

"We walked the Test Way over a three-day period about three years ago and are planning to do so again, possibly next year. We'd like to see it extended down Southampton Water and across Dibden Bay - assuming the new port isn't built - to link up with the New Forest."

Test Way runs from Eling to Inkpen Beacon, Berkshire - a distance of 49 miles.

For most of its route it follows the River Test, or one of its tributaries, and takes in everything from small leafy villages to large urban areas.

Totton and Eling Town Council has opened the three-mile extension with Hampshire County Council.

It includes Testwood Lane, Testvale Park, Ringwood Road, Brokenford Lane, Bartley Water, Eling Recreation Ground and Downs Park Crescent.
