A symposium to be held in Winchester will attempt to show what Islam can offer the West.

It will also correct misinformation about Islam, said A.S.B. Tariq, acting president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association. The symposium will be held in the Guildhall, Winchester, on May 7th at 7pm.

He explained: "Recent world events have created a moral divide in the West and people have become disillusioned, particularly about the true essence of Islam. Sadly, some Muslims and non-Muslims alike harbour misconceptions about issues like Jihad and human rights, giving Islam a dogmatic and sometimes uncivilised look. But interest in Islam is continuing to grow. One little-known fact is that Islam is, after Christianity, the most followed religion in the West."

Mr Tariq said: "There will be an opportunity to listen to learned speakers and take part in a question-and-answer session. Our intention is to correct misconceptions and assist in a full understanding of true Islam from the point of view of traditional and Western Muslims. Our aim is to produce better inter-faith understanding and to generate co-operation between followers of different faiths, thereby leading ultimately to world peace."

The event is being organised by the Bournemouth-Southampton branch of the association, which also covers Winchester. Anyone interested in attending the symposium should contact Mr Nasser on 01202 250 877.
