New Inn 1, Hook 2(After extra time)

A GOAL in the second period of extra time was enough to see the Basingstoke A Cup go back to Hook for the sixth time after Saturday's final at the Camrose Ground.

The decider looked an own goal off the head of New Inn central defender Stacey White but a jubilant Hook's Adie Green raced down the field, claiming the goal.

Hook had the better of a dour first half, with Green forcing a save from Andy Lear after 20 minutes and Richard Sygrove heading just wide from a cross by Ian Chamberlain.

Hayden Gowen shot over the bar for New Inn and Paul Clarkson wriggled past Simon Readings - only to shoot wide.

The second half brought a slight improvement from New Inn with Damian Gowen blazing over the bar and Clarkson having a good effort blocked by Readings for a corner.

In the 76th minute, the deadlock was broken after an error by Hook 'keeper Brian Martin, who allowed a free-kick from Andy McCluskey to go through his hands and into the net.

Hook surged forward and Green had a good chance to level in a one-on-one but Lear saved with his legs. Then, in the fourth minute of injury time, came the dramatic equaliser for Hook.

A free-kick by Paul Turrell on the left was not cleared well enough and a fierce drive from Robert Buckland flew past Lear and went in off the post to bring extra time.

That was the most exciting part of the match, with Green forcing a diving save from Lear and Clarkson having a header saved by Martin on the line.

The winner came from a long free-kick upfield from Robert Buckland. Up went White and Green and the header went over the hands of the helpless Lear. Green missed another chance to sew up the game, after a fumble by Lear from a Budden free-kick.

But the drama was not over. After pressure, New Inn were awarded a penalty in the 120th minute. Up stepped the usually-reliable McCluskey but he fired so high the ball went into the five-a-side pitches behind the goal.

The cup and awards were presented by Saturday League chairman Peter Baulch, who also presented the man-of-the-match award to Hook player-manager Buckland.
