Winchester City need a win from their trip to Portsmouth RN tomorrow night to clinch the Hampshire Premier League title. But a point would probably do.
Two goals apiece for Andy Forbes and Ian Mancey gave Winchester a 4-0 win at Locks Heath on Saturday, while nearest rivals Vosper Thornycroft stayed in the race with victory at Amesbury.
Vosper remain five points behind with two games to play but Winchester, who have three games in hand, have a vastly superior goal difference so a draw should be enough.
It was the perfect send off for Winchester boss Neil Hards who ran in yesterday's London Marathon. Hards said: "We could have won by a few more but their goalkeeper played very well in the first half. Vosper keep winning but the title's now within sight."
Vosper Thornycroft had two-goal Mike Spinney and Gary Male to thank for their 3-1 away win, before boss Dave Diaper conceded the title.
Spinney and Male took their goal tallies for the season to 40 and 37 respectively but Diaper said: "You've got to say that it's Winchester's title now but we've done very well to stop them winning it by January.
"We've got a better record than when we won the title two seasons ago. We've done the Hampshire Premier League proud."
Second-from-bottom Fawley provided the shock of the day, winning 4-2 at home to fourth-placed Poole Town, while Hayling United moved a step closer the Division 1 title by thrashing nearest rivals Verwood 5-0.
Two goals for Dave Aldridge and one apiece for Kevin Haywood, Tom Chapman and Ken O'Mahoney put Hayling five points clear at the top, having played two games more than second-placed Paulsgrove.
Aldridge scored the best goal of the five after a flowing four-man move to ensure a 3-0 lead for the home side at the break. Manager Argy McLetchey said: "We totally dominated, it was a very impressive performance. The title has got to be ours now."
In Division 2, second-placed Overton United lost 1-0 at Awbridge, leaving Laverstock & Ford three points clear at the top.
