The Island's new High Sheriff is Thorley art teacher Judith Hammer.
Mrs Hammer, 66, succeeds Ann Springman in the largely ceremonial role.
She was appointed this week by Judge Tom MacKean, who said Mrs Hammer had impeccable credentials for the job.
Mrs Hammer said: "I am looking forward to the challenge.
"I would especially like to help promote the work of organisations that are not well known, such as the Rural Community Council."
