Hampshire's number one club takes on the county's number two in a huge clash tomorrow.

One is fighting relegation while the other is tentatively peering over their shoulder and hoping they do not get dragged into trouble at the bottom end on the final day of the season.

Both have racked up a half-century of points over the last weekend - so what else could you ask for in a local derby between Basingstoke and Havant in National Division Three South?

A win for Havant, coupled with couple of other results going their way, could increase their hopes of beating the drop ten-fold and, given their recent run of form - having scored 109 points in their last two games, it is looking increasingly likely.

With Blackheath playing Kent rivals Old Colfeians and Tabard tackling winless Camberley, the other games that are key to their survival, they go into this match with hope beyond all hope that events elsewhere help.

But rumour has it that Basingstoke are expecting this to be a comfortable win for them.

"I know my players will go there and play with pride and commitment," said coach Dave Cook. "So it may not be the stroll that they are expecting."

Basingstoke's director of rugby, Ian Calder, knows that it will be a big game "regardless of the situation because of the very nature of the two clubs." But Basingstoke need the win as much as Havant, so it could be an absolute thriller.

With Tottonians having safely pocketed the London Division Four South-West championship, it is matters at the other end that have centre stage, with Southampton in danger of a swift return to Hampshire One if they do not win their home clash with Purley John Fisher.

But they are reliant on local rivals Trojans reversing their season's form to beat Old Emanuel and one-time promotion hopefuls Farnham defeating US Portsmouth - who are just 20 points difference ahead of the Test Park club - at Burnaby Road.

The Saints' squad has a more familiar look about it with James Wolfe returning in the centre, allowing skipper Tony Cador the chance to return to the back row, which boosts their chances of recording another home win, but it might not be enough.

"We will go all out for the win and hope the pressure does not affect our performance," said fly-half Dave Griffiths.

Trojans are going through the motions as they face up to the drop to Hampshire One, so Adrian Smith is given a chance at full-back, as is Simon Matthews at scrum-half as well as number-eight Development youngster Lax for the home game with Emanuel.

Totts will pick up the league trophy at Petersfield tomorrow, but they will want to do that with a victory under their belts and will not just cruise into the final game with everything sewn up.

Captain Miles Northover is urging his side to produce one last show performance now that the pressure is off and names the full side in an effort to do that.

"This is absolutely not just a run out for us," said the hooker.

"Everyone is fired up, despite this being a no-lose situation. It has been a great season and we want to finish it in style."
