Will Kendall has promised to bounce back after being axed as Hampshire vice captain.

Kendall was preparing to continue in the role for a third season before Shane Warne's ban. But now he is the casualty of manager Paul Terry's decision to streamline the decision making at Hampshire.

Terry and captain John Crawley will now select the team with a stand in captain called upon when required.

But Kendall said: "To have the vice captaincy taken away from me at this late stage seems a little bit unfair.

"Throughout the history of cricket clubs have had the role of a vice captain and I believe there is still a need for it now.

"I know they are streamlining the decision process and enabling me to concentrate on my batting, which is fair enough, but I find it a little bit strange to scrap the vice captaincy.

"There is a role there and I feel I had done a good job and was told as much as well, so obviously I am very disappointed.

"Now I must make sure I score the runs to secure my place in the side. Shaun Udal lost the vice captaincy two years ago and has been our player of the season ever since. I hope I can follow his example.

"It has given me extra incentive and motivation - hopefully that can benefit us all."

Kendall added: "John Crawley is an excellent appointment as captain. He has the respect of the players, is a great example and has everyone's full support."

Wasim Akram met his new teammates for the first time at the Rose Bowl yesterday - and will play in an inter squad Twenty20 match during the Hampshire open day on Sunday (10am-4.30pm)

Robin Smith continued his impressive pre season form by scoring 80 as Hampshire made 252-4 in 60 overs in the latest pre-season friendly against Surrey at the Rose Bowl yesterday.

Hampshire and Surrey agreed to a 60/40 per cent share of the day's 100 overs and Mark Ramprakash helped the visitors finish on 150-2. Hants resumed on 252-4 this morning but they had 40 overs to bat today while Surrey had 60.
