A SHORTAGE of school crossing patrols in Andover has led to Hampshire County Council appealing for new volunteers.
The county's team of school crossing patrols, or lollipop men and women, provide a vital service for thousands of schoolchildren throughout Hamp-shire - but more are needed.
Now the county is trying to encourage more people in Andover, where there are a number of vacancies, to give it a go.
Shirley Balch, aged 40, has been on school crossing patrol for two years and currently works at Smannell Road in Andover.
She said: "I love my job and knowing I give 100 per cent each day. It's worth it to get a smile from the children. It's a rewarding job."
The county council's road safety team has been responsible for the patrol service since it transferred from the education department in April 2002.
Executive member for environment, Cllr Keith Estlin, said: "School crossing patrols are an important part of the plan to reduce the number of child casualties on the road by 50 per cent by 2010. We're fortunate to have a team of dedicated and reliable patrols, and I know the service they provide is very much appreciated by parents and children alike - not to mention the county council. We need more community-minded people like them to ensure our children make it to and from school safely.
"I do urge people to consider giving a couple of hours of their time each day by becoming a patrol. Many of them find the job ideal for their lifestyles, and really enjoy meeting the same faces for a smile and a chat."
