MOBILE speed cameras have been installed at an accident blackspot on the road between Ludgershall and Tidworth following a series of incidents near Castledown School.
After a seven day traffic survey which found that 20 per cent of drivers were travelling at more than 60mph the Wiltshire Road safety partnership has won government permission to install the cameras.
Speeding drivers have been warned they now face at least a £60 fine and perhaps losing their licences.
During the 36 months to 31 December 2001, there was one fatal injury, five serious injuries and eight slight injuries on that part of Tidworth Road.
One of the serious injuries and one of the slight ones were sustained by children under 16. "Speed was a factor in at least a third of these accidents," said David Frampton, manager of the partnership's safety camera unit.
"And this was despite the fact there is a comprehensive school and a sports and community centre at this spot."
Now that government permission has been granted police officers intend to take a camera there as soon as they can.
"We don't want to catch people - we just want them to slow down," added Mr Frampton.
"It's outrageous people are speeding in such a dangerous place.
"For every 1mph by which people cut down their speed, there's a five per cent reduction in collisions."
