A SINGLE £1 bet won a Hampshire restaurant owner more than £150,000 in a game of poker.

Leo Kan scooped the whopping jackpot at Grosvenor Casino with the highest hand available - the royal flush - and then handed his winnings over to his wife.

The 56-year-old laid the ace, king, queen, jack and ten of hearts on the table to win the casino's national Super Stud Poker Game.

Every week players up and down the country compete for a progressive prize fund which rolls over until someone wins.

Mr Kan, who usually likes to play Kaluki, said it was the first time in his life he had drawn the poker hand.

He said: "It's a great feeling knowing you've got a winning hand. I couldn't wait to show the dealer."

The owner of Mr So restaurant in Jewry Street, Winchester, said he had no immediate plans for how to spend the £153,591.28.

He said: "I've given it to my wife. That's not the tradition in China where men come first but I have lived in this country for so long, I thought she should look after the money."

Chris Green, general manager of the Leisure World casino on West Quay Road, had to verify Mr Kan's hand with colleagues by checking cameras and the rest of the cards.

He said: "It was a very memorable night when Mr Kan won the money because we had not seen anything like it before.

"Let's just hope it's the start of more great jackpot wins for Southampton."
