Hampton & Richmond 0 Basingstoke Town 2

NEVILLE Stamp celebrated his new contract in style with a superb brace to secure Town's first-ever win at the Beveree.

On Thursday, the left-back signed a deal keeping him at the Camrose until the end of next season.

The former York City man struck in each half to complete an excellent week for the club.

Stamp's first was a magnificent 30-yard volley that flew into the top left corner past Hampton goal-keeper Andy Iga on 37 minutes.

Until that point, bottom-of-the-table Hampton had competed gamely and looked to cause Town problems at set-pieces.

They had an effort from Enrico Grimm ruled out after three minutes by the referee, who spotted a push.

Ricky Allaway, who had an impressive game in the heart of defence, went very close with a header just past the upright from a David Ray cross.

But Stamp's brilliant goal took the sting out of Hampton's efforts and encouraged Town, who finished the half strongly. The second period had a distinct end-of-season feel about it.

Although Steve Hemmings put a free header over, following Iga's block of Neville Roach's stinging drive, there was little action of note.

Nathan Stamp joined elder brother Neville to make his debut after signing from Queens Park Rangers, replacing the injured Ray.

He marked his first outing with a booking and some useful forays down the right flank. But it was from the left that Town grabbed their injury-time second goal.

Stamp senior cut down the wing and exchanged passes with substitute Jason Graham, who did well to hold up the ball and play a return.

On his weaker right foot, Stamp's continued run took him into the box and, after composing himself, he drilled a shot past Iga.

Town boss Ernie Howe said afterwards: "Neville has taken both goals very well and it's nice to get our first win here.

"You do worry about going through the motions in games like this. If we'd have done that we'd have got beat, but we've got young lads who want to win and do well.

"So it was pleasing to see the lads approach the game in the right way.

"There were some very good performances and I know they are really up for the Aldershot game."

Saturday's win set Town up nicely for the visit of the Ryman premier division leaders - not that they need any incentive as they chase a win double over their rivals.

Tomorrow night's encounter at the Camrose, kick-off 8pm, will see the biggest gate of the season and a host of media coverage, including Meridian Television.

Howe said: "We are all looking forward to this game. It will be a lot different to the Hampton game. We just have to get everyone fit and hope that everyone will be."

Craig McAllister missed Saturday's game due to tonsillitis, while David Ray came off with a bruised ankle.

Fans are advised to get to the Camrose early in anticipation of a large crowd.
