Herriard Sports 1 Overton United A 2
SHANE King's Overton youngsters may have started Saturday's Basingstoke B Cup final as underdogs, but their fine win was fully deserved.
The first chance at the Camrose Ground came from Herriard 47-year-old Steve Rackstraw, who hooked a difficult chance over the bar with only the 'keeper to beat.
Overton soon showed they meant business and, in the 11th minute, James Winfield forced a good save from Dean Hearne, who tipped the effort over the bar. Some 10 minutes later, Winfield's fierce volley hit a post following a corner from Darren Hewitt while Brian Seal was guarding the line well.
Chris Wadhams and Robert Wyke had chances for Overton before, out of the blue, Herriard forced a corner at the other end. Goalkeeper Simon Webb missed Ray Evans' inswinging effort and Gary Tarling got up to head Herriard in front in the 24th minute.
Overton should have equalised within a minute when Wyke had a chance from only two yards out but it flew over the bar and Hearne was soon in action again, tipping a Winfield header over the bar.
More pressure followed but Seal put in another good block when Wyke looked like equalising.
In the 33rd minute, Overton drew level when Mark Harris broke through the middle to lob over Hearne's hands.
In the second half, Overton kept up the pressure with Wadhams having a shot deflected for a corner in the 49th minute.
Soon after, he hooked a chance over the bar and, with Overton still looking the more likely scorers, Winfield hit a free-kick wide while substitute Miles Bygby shot wildly when well-placed.
The winner came in the 78th minute. Both Wyke and Wadhams found themselves unchallenged in the penalty area and, after Wyke nodded the ball forward, Wadhams headed home.
The cup and awards were presented by Bob Archer, who is retiring from the Basingstoke and District League management committee in June. The man-of-the-match award went to Overton defender James Thomson.
