THE FIRST playground in the country to have been specially designed with the needs of disabled children in mind has opened in Hook.
The play area in Ravenscroft has "inclusive" play equipment, which meets the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act.
It features wider entrances for wheelchair access, basket swings suitable for children unable to sit upright, and enough space for adult carers to accompany children on the equipment.
Shirley Clancy, manager of Hook Village Nursery, said: "We are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of special needs children having the same access to play equipment as everybody else.
"This is just the kind of equipment we need, giving excitement, stimulation and fun for all."
Hart District Council chairman Jonathan Glen unveiled the new play area, and then joined the children to try out some of the equipment.
He said: "This is a fine example of how play can be made challenging and safe for all users. I congratulate the parish council and everyone who has been involved in its creation."
