SOUTHAMPTON Institute will be presenting the rewards of a successful year at Monday night's sports event at Ikon in Leisure World (7.30pm).

The awards evening, sponsored by STA travel, celebrates another year of good progress for institute sporting students in both team and individual events.

Medals won in British Universities Sports Association (BUsa) competitions will be represented, and colours will be awarded to those who have

contributed to their chosen sport.

Awards include best newcomer (male and female), best contribution, best coach and the male and female sports personality of the year.

It was not possible to reveal the nominations as the students

concerned do not know who is in the running for prizes.

Tickets are available on the door on the night priced £5.

Meanwhile, the institute's golfers have marched through to the semi-finals of the BUsa Shield with a thrilling 5-4 win over the University of Warwick.

The mini Ryder Cup format saw a series of three foursomes in the morning followed by six singles matches after lunch.

On a glorious day at the Rose Bowl course, the institute students were caught napping by the 7am start and were soon trailing in all three foursomes matches.

However, the middle pairing of skipper Andy Venning and Tom Dowty led a recovery which saw all three home pairs ahead by the turn. Venning and Dowty went on to win 4 and 3, but the other two games proved closer encounters.

Mike Masters and Paul Smith eventually secured a point for the institute with a 3&1 victory, but third pair Ben Guy and Steve Geary lost at the 17th.

Masters and Smith were soon into their stride in the afternoon singles, but with Dowty, Guy and Geary all trailing at the turn it looked increasingly likely that Venning's match could be the key.

Smith completed a 5&4 victory with a stunning bunker shot at the 14th, and Masters triumphed 3&2.

Steve Geary won four successive holes to turn a three-hole deficit into a one-hole lead by the 14th, but was beaten on the 18th green.

With Dowty having an off-day on the greens, it was vital that either Venning or Guy secure a point.

With the skipper four up through 11, the win looked secure, but his lead was clawed back to one, and with Ben Guy dormy three down the situation was changing.

Guy won 16 and 17 to keep his match alive, and, to the relief of the home team and supporters, Andy Venning won the 17th to clinch the match and also maintain his unbeaten individual record for the season. With the result secured, Guy conceded the final game.

The win has set-up a semi-final trip to Nottingham Trent on April 30.

The institute men's rugby XV lost the semi-final clash with Portsmouth University in the South of England Student Sports Association (SESSA) Cup 22-10.
