SOUTHAMPTON'S Commonwealth Games gold medallist Pete Waterfield is included in the near full-strength British squad which is competing in this weekend's Arena Diving Champions Cup in Sweden.

National performance director Steve Foley is expecting "big things" from his athletes in a meeting which sees diving champions from almost 20 nations clash in Stockholm.

"The competition will help us gauge where we are ranked against European opposition both individually and in the synchronised events," he said.

"I'm looking for top three places because if we're not in the top three in Europe we're not top seven in the world and we need to be as we look to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games."

Apart from Waterfield, the British team consists of Mark Shipman (Sheffield), Leon Taylor (Sheffield), Tandi Gerrard (Leeds), Monique McCarroll (Edinburgh), Stacie Powell (Bagiu, London), Tracey Richardson (Southend), Jane Smith (Sheffield) and Karen Smith (Southend).

"It's a highly ranked competition featuring the likes of Russia and Germany, and I've got high expectations," added Foley.

"However, I'm under no illusions that the world's best nations in China, the USA and Mexico will obviously be missing.

"I'll be disappointed if we don't come home with medals because we've proven in the last couple of years that we're up there with the best in Europe."

The Stockholm meet is being used by Foley to assess what extra work needs to be targeted as they head towards the Barcelona World Championships in July.
