SOUTHAMPTON neighbours Richard Bland and Matt Blackey were left to cry into their beer after missing the cut in the Heineken Classic at the Royal Melbourne GC.

As Paul Casey set a red-hot pace at 12 under, Bland missed his second successive cut after following a first round 74 with a 73 yesterday. The promise of an early birdie was snuffed out by a double bogey at the fourth and the Stoneham man finished with a 73.

At three over he was three off the cut. Blackey was one shot further back after a bleak run of four bogies between the fourth and eighth holes. He had the consolation of a couple of birdies but a second round 75 left him trailing in 106th place.

Andy Beal from Salisbury wasn't having the best of times in the first Challenge Tour event of the year in Central America where a first round 79 left his well down the field in the MasterCard Costa Rica Open.
