The conversion into homes of Brookvale Elementary School in Basingstoke by local property company T A Fisher has been highly commended in the Basingstoke and Deane Design Awards 2002. This accolade recognises the sensitive and imaginative conversion by TA Fisher, producing a stunning 15-property development in a conservation area close to the centre of the town.
Brookvale School was one of 15 projects short-listed by an independent panel of professional experts from a total of 43 nominations received by the planning, environment and transport department of the Borough of Basingstoke and Deane.
Brookvale retains the character of the old Edwardian school, which was built in 1906. Architects Andrews Kalik Associates have vast experience in bringing new life and purpose to heritage buildings.
For its part, TA Fisher's team of highly skilled craftsmen has used traditional construction methods to restore the building's original features, from its open eaves roof structures to the detailed brickwork and bell tower.
John Fisher, managing director of TA Fisher, said: "So many modern developments lack original character, but that can hardly be said of Brookvale. The conversion of the old school has produced a unique living environment that offers stylish and distinguished homes in a prime location".
