The Alresford Chamber of Commerce has launched an official new website for the town called www.alresford.org.

The Chamber's aim is to promote the town as a whole and it already has at its fingertips a raft of information which it updates on a regular basis, to make the website representative of the whole community. The site has 72 pages, is growing by the day and has already had over 2,000 hits since it went live. The website contains:

tourist information (already created in Spend a Day in Alresford)

accommodation (contained in the town's Bed & Breakfast list)

a comprehensive list of businesses, clubs and societies (the Alresford Directory)

hyperlinks to the Watercress Line, local businesses and accommodation

as well as general information, maps, etc., useful to virtual visitors

"Websites that are designed primarily to make money out of advertising rarely contain enough information to draw a large volume of visitors," says Chamber chairman Andrew Merry. "However the Chamber now produces enough publications to make it a worthwhile site and it will fulfil a valuable role in promoting our local retailers and services. We want all our clubs and societies to send us up to 200 words about themselves too and we will put this information on the website free of charge.

"We would also like residents to look at the site and come back to us with any corrections or suggestions on how we can improve it," said Andrew.

The site has been donated to the Chamber by local resident Roy Gentry, who created it and who will continue to be its webmaster. He can be contacted by email for more information or suggestions and local organisations should e mail him with details of their society or charity.

Welcoming the launch of the new website, Chamber Chairman Andrew Merry said "It is vital for the prosperity of the town that we use every tool at our disposal to promote our businesses. We will continue to publish the Alresford Diary & Directory of Services and Spend a Day in Alresford, but the new website will also give us another string to our bow."
