A prisoner who started a blaze in a cell in the segregation unit at Winchester jail on Sunday evening was rescued by firefighters and taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.
A prison spokesman said there was "minimal damage" to the cell and added that the incident was still being investigated.
Three firecrews from Winchester and one from Eastleigh were at the scene for over an hour.
