YOUNGSTERS from Eastleigh's Barton Peveril College made sure that Christmas came early for more than 80 local senior citizens with an evening of song and dance.

Residents from sheltered accommodation in Cherbourg Road were treated to a Christmas party laid on by staff and students of the neighbouring college.

Guests were welcomed by Eastleigh's deputy mayor, Councillor Glynn Davies-Dear. The students then presented a cabaret, telling the story of Christmas through the ages, followed by students and guests dancing away together to 70s and 80s music. The evening finished with a rousing rendition of Christmas carols.

Gladys Baker, 76, a former secretary, said: "I had a lovely time. The students really put themselves out and couldn't do enough for us. You really couldn't fault them. The food was great and everyone got on really well."

Many of the guests have been going to the parties for more than ten years.

Party co-ordinator Marilyn Leafe said: "It is a wonderful opportunity for students to serve the local community and to say thank you to our neighbours."
