SOUTHAMPTON residents can recycle their Christmas trees in a council initiative to help the environment.

Trees can be left out with the normal rubbish to be collected by a specialist horticultural team. The trees will be chipped and turned into mulch for flowerbeds and woodland areas around the city.

Southampton City Council has also arranged for 13 sites to be used as "drop zones" where Christmas trees can be taken to be shredded and recycled.

These sites are: Allders at Home, Winchester Road, Shirley; Bitterne Methodist Church, Whites Road, Bitterne; Daisy Dip junction, Daisy Road, Bassett Green; Dunkirk Road car park, Lordswood; Eastpoint Centre, Thornhill; Mansel Park, Evenlode Road, Millbrook; Millbrook Trading Estate; Olive Road Community Centre, Shirley Warren; Cannon Street recycling area; Riverside Park (by the changing rooms); Mayfield Playing Fields, Weston Lane; Yeovil Chase Community Centre, Hatfield.

You can also recycle your Christmas cards at WH Smith and Tesco from Jan-uary 6 to February 2.
