ANDOVER New Street continued to rocket up the Hants Premier table as they stretched their unbeaten run to 14 matches when two goals from recent import Jay Mann gave them a splendid 2-1 home win against Poole Town at Foxcotte Park last Saturday.

Street, who have now taken points off three of the top four sides in the Hants Premier and are undefeated in their in their last 10 league games, were well worth their victory in a thrilling game that centred around three penalties.

Street had the first of the match after the much-travelled Mann burst clear only to be hauled down by the Poole 'keeper, who was lucky to escape with a yellow card, but Street's teenaged skipper Bobby Swayne missed the resulting spot kick - his first penalty miss of the season.

However, a confident Street playing more of a long-ball game than usual due to the wet conditions deservedly went ahead five minutes later when Dave Dunn's long clearance found Mann and he coolly chipped the 'keeper as he came from his line.

They had the chance to go further ahead with Nic Turpin lobbing just over after his electric pace caught out the visiting defence but Poole came back strongly in the closing stages of the half and levelled from a penalty awarded after a scramble in the Street goal mouth following a corner.

Second half started with Poole still in the ascendancy and Street again owed much to 'keeper Dave Tasker as he kept them in the game with another series of cracking saves as the home side soaked up the pressure.

Street however gradually got on top as they started to turn the Poole defence with their long-ball tactics and the increasing pressure finally told when them being awarded a second penalty with 10 minutes left to play, Michael Richmond having been upended in the area after he got in behind the Poole defence on right from a left-wing cross from Jon Holman.

The experienced Mann however was prepared to shoulder the responsibilty and he put his spot kick away to seal another fine win for Gary Prince's revitalised side and Poole ended the game with only 10 players after they had their experienced defender Brian Mundy red carded in the dying minutes for saying something to one of the referee's assistants.

"We were well worth the win," said Prince. "It was the best we've played all season in the first half but there's a good buzz about the place at the moments and the lads have got a lot of self belief. We hit the woodwork twice and had two others shots cleared off the line but our 'keeper Dave Tasker kept us in the game at times in the second half. "

Earlier in the week a much-changed Street side won through to the third round of the Andover Open Cup with a 4-3 home win against Mottisfont but they left it late as they were trailing 3-1 with 20 minutes left to play.

However, goals from Paul Gilbert, Nic Turpin and Jay Mann levelled the tie and the winner came late on from an own goal when skipper Bobby Swayne's free-kick was deflected in by a Mottisfont defender.

Stockbridge made it four wins on the trot with last Saturday's 2-1 home victory over a strong and physical East Cowes Vics in the Hants Premier - but manager Barry Andrews and his assistant Sean Sanders were not there to see it.

The 'Bridge managerial duo were both away for the weekend and veteran defender Stuart Thomson and Mark Smith, another member of the 'Bridge managerial team, were in charge.

"They did a great job," said Andrews, "and got a great result, the side really played well."

New midfield signing John Vowles had another outstanding game in midfield and Andrews must have been delighted in beating JWL trio BAT Sports, Brockenhurst and Bemerton in signing him. "He's a good midfield play and has made a big difference since he joined us," said Andrews.

Paul Sanders gave 'Bridge the lead on the half hour and they held it for another 30 minutes when East Cowes levelled, but a resolute 'Bridge were not to be denied and it was left to the unsung Mark Butcher who emerged as unlikely match winner when he stole in to knock in the decider six minutes from the end.

Earlier in the week 'Bridge won through to the third round of the North Hants Senior Cup with a comfortable 3-0 home win against NHL cup giant-killers Vernham Dean with gaols from John Vowles, Wayne Sale and John Hewitt.

Stockbridge (3-5-2): Morris; Chainey, Atkins, Savage; Sale, Butcher, Vowles, Bain, Smith; Daubney, Paul Sanders. Subs: Winton (for Bain 70 mins), Thomson (not used).

Broughton carried on from where they left off the previous week with a 4-0 home trouncing of Romsey in their Hants Division Two bottom-of-the-table clash with new signing Callum Robertson scoring an a first-half hat-trick and laying on the other goal.

It was the first time this season that Broughton have gained back-to-back victories after the previous week's 4-2 away success at QK Southampton with new boss Paul Cullen in charge of the team for the first time.

"We played some nice football, especially in the first half, and it was a pleasure to watch," said a delighted Cullen.

Broughton dominated throughout after racing into commanding first-half lead with all four goals coming in quick succession. Romsey had only two shots on target throughout the game but Neil Collis in the Broughton goal deserved his clean sheet with two superb saves to deny the visitors.

Robertson rifled Broughton ahead after 14 minutes with a shot into the top corner from a good cross by Dean Bowditch, minutes later he lashed home the second from 18 yards and shortly after completed his hat-trick. His day was far from finished as he laid on Broughton's fourth goal with a free kick for Dean Cogan to head home from close range.

Overton United's inconsistency cost them again as Paul Chambers village side lost top spot in Hants Division Two crashed to their heaviest defeat of the season with last Saturday's 4-0 thumping at Ordnance Survey, but Andy Hounslow and Brendan Spanswick's Ludgershall Sports were back on the goals trailing and winning ways with an impressive 4-0 away win against struggling M&T Awbridge.
