Five Bells 1, Exchange 0

Wallop pub side Five Bells won through to the last eight of the North Hants Sunday John Ward Cup when defeating Winchester pub team Exchange in a tense game with the all-important goal come late in the second half from Neil McArthur.

In a goal-less first half Pete Newmen's Five Bells should have been in front on a couple of occasions. They missed a guilt edged chance in the first minute and later Neal Catchpole was a fraction too high with an attempt to chip the 'keeper.

Exchange came more into the game but Ian Jullif and and Steve Elvins, a replacement for the injured John Robb, won the midfield contest with help from wide men Arron Bullock and Nick Newman.

With other chances going begging and extra time looming, Five Bells finally broke the deadlock with 10 minutes left with McArthur in the right place to tap into an empty net from a square pass from Catchpole following a swift breakaway down wn the right.

Five Bells 'keeper Dave Carter had few problems and his defenfence held firm to record their second clean sheet in successive games

Vernham Dean 3 Fred Druce Res 1

Jon Warne's Vernham Dean bounced back from the previous week's cup defeat and kept the pressure on the other teams at the top of the ADSL division three with a fine home win over Fred Druce Res.

Vernham took an early lead when busy striker Chris Warne slotted away the first after cleverly linking up with Robbie Ablett, who went on to become a two-goal hero by half-time with a brace of well-taken shots.

While the home team's 3-0 lead effectively wrapped up the game before the break, Fred Druce came back strongly in the second half and it took some resolute defending from Guy Terry, Richard Derbyshire, Garry Percival and Ed Lay and cat-like goalkeeping from Mark Sturgess to ensure that Druce only gained a consolation goal. Battling performances also came from midfielders Mark Terry, Matt Rose, Grant Langfield and Matt Bright.

Abbotts Mitre 3 Hurstbourne RBL Res 6

Hurstbourne RBL Res progressed to the third round of the ADSL Martin Turner Cup after beating a spirited Abbots Mitre side with Tom McMillan undoubtedly the star of the show by scoring five of the six Legion goals.

McMillan gave them an early two-goal lead but then Legion not for the first time this season took their foot off the pedal and Abbots Mitre came back into the game with goals late in the first half.

Legion manager Ian Price rang the changes in the second half and McMillan soon completed his hat-trick. He scored again to give Legion another comfortable two-goal cushion for the second time, but Abbots Mitre did not go down without a fight as they pulled back to 4-3 only for Wayne Annetts to kill the game off with Legion's fifth before star man McMillan completed his nap hand with Legion's sixth goal.

Hurstbourne RBL Res 3, Collingwood RS 1

Hurstbourne RBL Res turned in probably their best performance of the season with their recent defeat of Collingwood RS in the second round of the Hants Sunday Junior 'B' Cup, despite manager Ian Price fielding what he considered understrength team. The in-form Tom McMillan gave Legion the lead and then moments later his classy footwork paved the way for Dean Cornwall to chip the Collingwood 'keeper from the edge of the area to put the home side further ahead.

Collingwood came back but were denied again by fine play from Colin Reid in the Legion goal but he was given no chance late in the first half after the visitors sprung the Legion offside trap.

Legion's defence dominated the Collingwood attack in the second half and, despite another appearance from manager Price after McMillan limped off injured, they finally sealed the game with a third goal following one of Wayne Sale's torpedo-like throw-ins was bundled home from five yards by Mark Humphries.

Wyke Down 2 Guilbert UK 0

A much depleted and understrength Wyke Down showed true grit and determination in beating Guilbert UK in the ADSL third division on a quagmire of a pitch. Throughout the match Guilbert had the majority of possession but Wyke Down defended resolutely and always looked lively on the break.

Ten mintues into the second half an energetic run and close-range finish from defender Stuart Norridge broke the deadlock

With Guilbert committed to attack in increasing numbers they were always vulnerable to the counter attack and debutant Gary Kew capped a fine display with a clever chip with minutes left to seal the points.

Wyke Down manager Derek Thrower was delighted with his team. A makeshift midfield worked had, particularly Keith Holland making a rare 90 minute appearance and the ever reliable 'keeper Andy Tyrer revelled in the conditions.
