BEN Thomson brought back memories of his brilliant Brockenhurst best with a stunning goal for Totton at Christchurch last night in the Jewson Wessex League Cup.

In a move reminiscent of his Grigg Lane days, he picked the ball up in his own half and beat five players before clipping the ball past the keeper.

It capped a 2-0 second round, first leg victory by the Stags who, just five minutes earlier, had taken the lead through Paddy James.

Christchurch co-boss Tony Brown couldn't help but admit that Thomson's strike was special.

He said: "It was a great goal from Totton's point of view but, looking at it from a Christchurch angle, it was disappointing that five people couldn't get a tackle in on him.

"But Ben's been at a higher level with Bashley and Newport and quality players tend to do things like that."

It might have been different for Priory had Paul Rideout not missed an easy opportunity at the end of a goalless first half.

Lymington & New Milton are safely through to a quarter-final against Wimborne or Eastleigh having finished off AFC Newbury 4-1 on the night and 7-1 on aggregate at Faraday Road.

Kevin Gill, Mark Turner, Leigh Phillips and Steve Strong piled on the agony for the absentee-hit Berkshire side, who replied through Steve Watt in the 82nd minute.

Cowes Sports seized an incredible 4-0 half-time lead at Bournemouth Poppies, putting themselves 4-2 up on aggregate.

But the Dorset hosts, who were forced to play 17-year-old outfielder Colin Dand in goal, staged a stunning second-half fightback to squeeze through to the last eight.

Mark Dancer and substitute Gary Clark pulled Poppies level on aggregate and the decider came on 89 minutes when Danny Holmes let fly from 25 yards and his shot took a lucky deflection past the keeper.

"At 4-0 down we had nothing to lose," said Bournemouth boss Keith Williams. "We left two at the back and went for it. It's tremendous character on the part of our lads that we're still in the cup."

Andover safely protected a 3-2 first-leg lead in a 0-0 draw against Thatcham at the Portway Stadium. Howard Goddard's men now face Moneyfields, who brushed Alton Town aside 3-0 to progress 5-2 on aggregate.

Nathan Wall got two for the Portsmouth club and the other came from Louis Savage, a recent midfield/frontline signing from Havant & Waterlooville.

Andy Culliford's stoppage-time winner squeezed Brockenhurst past Downton 3-2 on aggregate. Next up for Pete Moore's side are Bemerton Heath Harlequins, the 4-0 conquerors of Portland United last night.

With the tie balanced at 1-1 from the first leg, Harlequins got their first-half act together to score through Rew Waters and Darren Harding.

But Portland did everything but score in the second half, hitting the bar, the post and missing out on a couple of penalty claims before Harding and Keith Richardson punished them against the run of play.

Bemerton secretary Andy Hardwick was honest enough to admit: "We played really well in the first half but Portland dominated the second and they didn't deserve to lose 4-0."

Quarter-final draw: Moneyfields v Andover, Bemerton v Brockenhurst, Christchurch or AFC Totton v Bournemouth Poppies, Lymington & New Milton v Wimborne or Eastleigh.
