FORMER Royal Navy petty officer John Deas has used his skills to create a dazzling array of ships' crests.

He has created nearly 1,700 and the latest recipient of his art is Fareham Borough Council.

He presented a replica of HMS Fareham's crest to the Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Pamela Bryant.

She told him: "I am delighted to accept this replica of HMS Fareham's crest on behalf of the borough.

"I am sure it will be of great interest to those who visit the mayor's parlour."

John, who served in the Royal Navy for more than 23 years, aims to collect all the crests of Royal Navy ships past and present.

A copy artist at school, John, now an invalid, has used his delicate skills to carve hundreds of crests.

A dog rescue charity benefits from his work, but he needs help because it can be a costly exercise creating so many crests.
