SKATERS in Southampton received an early Christmas present when a brand new skate-park was unveiled in the city centre.

The state-of-the-art ramp complex in Hoglands Park was officially handed over to skaters in a ceremony yesterday.

Costing more than £100,000, the graphite and steel ramps will be able to accommodate skateboarders, roller bladers and BMX bikes.

City council executive member for leisure and tourism Derek Burke, said: "The construction company who built the ramps said it was the biggest one they have ever built.

"It is a big Christmas present from the council to the youngsters in Southampton."

The new skate park is a long awaited replacement for the popular ramp complex in Mayflower Park, which fell into disrepair. It features several ramps and jumps of various heights and covers an area of 16m by 25m.

Plans for a similar skate park on Hinkler Green, in Thornhill, have been approved and could be followed by another in Coxford.
