TOY shops in Southampton's WestQuay are celebrating Christmas early as shoppers boost festive sales in the city.

Record numbers of shoppers at the shopping centre are boosting festive takings and so far, it has been adaptations of the traditional dolls and furry animals which have been the biggest sellers.

But the surprise hit of Christmas 2002 has been the Beyblades, made popular by a Japanese cartoon strip. In addition to this, best selling items include Lord of the Rings figures and roller blades.

Andy Hall, store manager at Gamleys in WestQuay, said: "It's a real joy seeing families coming straight to Gamleys at Christmas time. Children's eyes light up when they see the toys we have on offer, and the same can often be said of their parents too!"
