LEGENDARY TV sports presenter Dickie Davies has been appointed president of Sandford Springs Golf Club.

The 15-handicapper will host an annual president's day and will also be involved in a range of other activities aimed at raising the Kingsclere club's profile.

It is a position Davies is eager to take up. He said: "It is an enormous privilege to be asked to become president of any golf club.

"But being asked to become president of a club as prestigious as Sandford Springs makes it even more of an honour."

Davies is one of Britain's most respected TV sports presenters.

In his long career at ITV he fronted a wide range of leading sports events, including the Olympic Games, world and European athletics, international snooker and boxing and, of course, World of Sport.

He said: "I am looking forward to taking up the role of president immensely."

Sandford Springs owners, the Leaderboard Group, who recently added the former Benson and Hedges Open venue, the Oxfordshire, to a stable which includes Chart Hills and Dale Hill, have continually improved the local course.

As well as providing a support base for long-standing member Kirsty Taylor, this season's European Ladies Tour rookie of the year, the club recently appointed Claire Duffy to the staff, herself a touring professional.

On-course additions include a new putting green outside the clubhouse, new tees, improved irrigation and greenkeeping facilities.
