TWO Southampton ABC boxers excelled at the Riverside Leisure Centre in Bristol on Saturday.

First-up was Rob Mann fighting in the 50kg division, against Steven Warne from the Devonport Police ABC.

The 14-year-old Bitterne Park schoolboy started slowly and allowed his Devon opponent to win the first round thanks to his higher work rate.

But realising the situation, Rob stepped up a gear and began to take control of the contest with some hard punching combinations.

The second finished with the Southampton boy well on top.

The third round followed the same pattern and his all-out pressure finally forced the referee to rescue Warne, giving Mann his fourth successive win since starting his amateur career this season.

Richard Smart (pictured in team shot, back left) faced ex-England representative Dan Stewart for the second time in a week after out-pointing him at Ikon nightclub last week.

Stewart, from Bristol, believed he would fair better on home turf but the Chamberlayne Park schoolboy proved the first result was no fluke.

He again controlled the opening with classic boxing skills. But, in the third round, Stewart, spurred on by an extremely partisan crowd, tried to retrieve the situation by desperately throwing punch from every angle.

But Smart used all the experience he had gained in his previous 35 contests to stay in control to secure a well-deserved victory over a very game and determined opponent.
