Brokenhurst Manor flew the flag proudly for Britain in the world final of the John Deere Golf Team Championships at Greyhawk in Arizona.

The five-man team who went out to the famed Scottsdale complex as John Deere British champions were 16th in a 34-strong field.

In an event dominated by the host American team, Brokenhurst beat off most of their other European finalists and club manager Paul Clifford said: "After 26 holes we were in pretty good shape at 11-under and just six shots off the lead.

"It was looking even better going through the first eight holes of the second round in eight-under, then the wheels came off a bit. We were looking at an eagle at the eighth but finished up dropping a shot and it all came apart a little bit after that.

"The greens were just so fast - like greased lightning. They were like nothing we'd ever experienced before, and that obviously suited the American team."

Brokenhurst finished with a ten-under total for the competition played in a Texas Scramble format.

It was the first time Britain had sent a team to the world final, sponsored by leading golf course machinery distributors John Deere, which brought teams from all corners of the globe to compete in the grand final at Greyhawk.

Brokenhurst Manor, led by club professional Bruce Parker, had come through three tough stages, including the South of England and British Finals.
