Waugh is not the man for Hampshire

RUMOURS that Hampshire are trying to bring Australian batsman Mark Waugh to the Rose Bowl next summer as their second overseas player have been scotched by the county, writes Ian Henderson.

The 37 year old batsman recently announced his retirement from international cricket after more than 140 Test appearances.

The rumour mill suggested that Shane Warne, a close friend of Waugh, would try persuading him to play for Hampshire next summer.

But the county's director of cricket, Tim Tremlett, told me: "We did talk to Mark's agent during the summer, but we've taken it no further.

"Our new coach Paul Terry is looking for a younger batsman and both he and Shane have approached another Australian. We hope to have some positive news on this before Christmas."

l Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove was this week voted on to the ECB management committee and promises to ask 'some searching questions' about England's failures.

Bransgrove flies to Australia on Thursday to watch the two final Tests and to have discussions with both Warne and Terry.

A full interview with Bransgrove and a competition for tickets for South Africa v Zimbabwe at the Rose Bowl next July will appear in next week's issue.
