HAVANT & Waterlooville's glee at winning 5-1 at rock-bottom Ilkeston on Saturday has been tempered by a health scare surrounding their influential midfielder Paul Wood.

The 38-year-old former Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday player was taken ill on the coach to Derbyshire and rushed to hospital with internal bleeding.

Wood was first hospitalised with stomach problems two seasons ago and, ironically, it was at Ilkeston where the problems began.

Co-manager Mick Jenkins reported: "Paul looked very drawn and pale on the trip up and was rushed straight to hospital as soon as we got there.

"He remained there until we left for home at 6.30pm and I understand he's in Bournemouth General Hospital now having tests.

"This is first recurrence of the problem he's had, but it's very worrying.

"Our thoughts are with Paul, his wife Mandy and his family."

It was a costly afternoon for Havant all round. Thanks to a hard challenge from Ilkeston's new signing Charlie Hartfield from Sheffield United, they lost defender Christian Hanson at half-time with a hamstring problem and Jenkins was dismissed from the dugout for complaining because he felt his players were getting no protection from the officials.

Hartfield also went in late on Bobby Howe and feelings became so heated that there was a scuffle in the tunnel at the final whistle after the Ilkeston man had finally received the red card for dissent.

Even so, it was the Hawks who went home smiling.

Having taken the lead through Tim Hambley from Chris Ferrett's ninth-minute cross, they went on to dominate the game with two goals apiece from front pair James Taylor and Warren Haughton, who have now netted 20 between them.

It lifts H&W to 15th in the table and Jenkins pointed out: "We've only lost one in 11 now and have really turned our season around. Saturday's win was against the odds because we've nev-er won at Ilkeston before.

"In the six times we've played them, the most we've got is a draw."
