THOUSANDS of needy South-ampton children will be smiling this Christmas thanks to a Daily Echo-backed toy appeal.

Every year Southampton Voluntary Services approach local businesses asking for help finding Christmas presents for the 7,500 youngsters who are classed as "of concern".

Mayor Brian Parnell joined heads of SVS in thanking everyone involved for their help at the formal opening of the appeal.

"Thanks to SVS many children will be happy this year, along with their mums and dads," he said.

SVS chief executive Jo Ash said: "For some families it's a choice between Christmas presents and having food on the table."

Special thanks went to co-ordinator Irene Weyman, described by chairman Roy Stubbs as "the number one volunteer on this project".

Mrs Weyman has been responsible for rallying businesses to contribute either gifts or money.

Once all the presents have been donated, she will be responsible for the distribution of up to three lorry-loads of toys.

"We need more companies who are willing to participate," said the retired sales executive. "Without this scheme these children would get nothing."

At the launch were Father Christmas and representatives from voluntary groups and 32 businesses who have made donations.

Radio Solent's Sylv Willoughby was involved in a special broadcast with St Mark's School choir singing modern Christmas classics.

Organiser Zoe Truong said this year's appeal had already been very successful.

After a donation of 2,000 toys from major manufacturer Tomy, she was confident last year's record of 3,028 toys would be smashed.
