SIGNIFICANT changes have taken place this week in the Winchester City boardroom with directors Mike and Rob Smith standing down.
The father and son pair came to the club's rescue in February 1999 when it was about to go out of business through debts and a distinct lack of interest in the local community. But the pair, co-owners of the Totton-based Southampton Model Centre, swiftly began a rebuilding which culminated in the club winning the Hampshire League Division 1 title and the Southampton senior Cup (at The Dell) eighteen months ago. The club amalgamated with Winchester Castle in the summer of 2001 and they were were joined on the Board by Castle chairman Richard Newsome. Since then, City have made major improvements to the ground, including the installation of floodlights and a 150-seater stand, and have invested heavily in strengthening the playing staff. Says outgoing managing director, Mike Smith: "We're very proud of what we've been able to achieve in keeping this great old club afloat and in taking it forward too. "But we have a major expansion of our business looming in the New Year and we won't be able to devote the time and financial resources required to continue as directors of the club. "We'll still be among City's biggest supporters and will get to matches as often as possible. In the meantime, we wish Richard and everyone at the club continued success." Rob Smith steps down from his role as vice chairman and part-time groundsman. "We've got a cracking side together now and I know the club can go a long way," he said.. "But we feel we've done all we can and now it's time for others to take it on to the next level." City's director of football, David Malone, paid tribute to the outgoing duo. "Our current success is due in no small way to Mike and Rob who saved the club from extinction," he said. "We owe them a great debt and wish them well in their new business venture. They'll always be welcome visitors here."
