Cookie Bridgeman and Pauline Davies mounted a grandstand finish to earn Royal Winchester a glorious victory in the Captains Classic Grand Final at the Le Meridien Penina Golf resort in Portugal.
The pair knew they would have to produce something special on the last day after trailing by four points after the first round and three after the second and they duly obliged.
Royall Winchester ladies captain Cookie (handicap 14) and Pauline (nine) accumulated a fantastic 37 stableford points between them over the last nine holes to overhaul the strong Worfield pair on the last green.
Cookie made a tough downhill putt for a bogey, scoring two points and Pauline, solid all week, nailed a tricky ten foot birdie putt for four precious points and it got them home by just two points. Their final total was 135 points.
Worldwide Tournament Golf Ltd presented the event which has been contested all through the summer by club captains and their chosen partners.
Cookie and Pauline came through three knockout rounds then won the regional final at Burnham Beaches to earn their trip to Portugal.
There was very nearly a Hampshire double in the Grand Final because in the men's event Stoneham captain Chris Drew (14) and club manager Richard PenleyMartin (seven) also staged a fabulous finish to just miss out on a top three place.
They were three behind on day one, eight on day two before staging a great comeback over the front nine of the last round with Chris's 19 points being the best score of the week.
However, with the opposition sticking to their task well, they couldn't quite hang on and finished a very creditable fourth from Canterbury 126 points, Orchardleigh 125 and Ranfurly Castle from Scotland 120. Stoneham scored 116.
The Grand Final was played over 54 holes on the Sir Henry Cotton designed championship course, a tough challenge playing to its full length of 7,000 yards for the men and 5,700 yards for the ladies.
